Mercury is retrograde three times in 2026: February 26 to March 20 in Pisces, June 29 to July 23 in Cancer, and October 24 to November 13 in Scorpio. All three fall in water signs, so this year’s retrogrades are less about contracts and more about feelings, old relationships and things left unsaid. Below are the exact times, the shadow periods, and what each retrograde asks for. The reassurance first: Mercury is retrograde roughly a fifth of every year. It is a calendar, not a catastrophe.

Where the times come from: the dates are the moments Mercury’s apparent ecliptic speed, seen from Earth, passes through zero (the stations), computed with an astronomical ephemeris and given in UTC. If another site shows a date one day off, the cause is almost always time zone: the July station, for example, is July 23 in UTC and the Americas but already July 24 in Türkiye and points east.
What is Mercury retrograde, and does it really move backwards?
No, Mercury never reverses; from Earth it only appears to drift backwards against the stars. The two planets orbit the Sun at different speeds, and as Mercury overtakes us its path across our sky loops back for a few weeks, the way a car you are passing on the motorway seems for a moment to slide backwards. Because astrology assigns Mercury to communication, thinking, contracts and travel, those weeks are traditionally read as a time for review rather than launch.
In numbers: Mercury stations retrograde three, sometimes four, times a year, for about three weeks each time, roughly 19% of the year in total. So if something went wrong “during retrograde,” the odds were already one in five that any given day would be one.
What is the shadow period?
The shadow is the softer margin on either side of the three retrograde weeks. Before the station, Mercury crosses the degrees it will later reverse over; that is the pre-shadow. After the retrograde ends, it crosses those same degrees a third time, moving forward again; that is the post-shadow. In practice, an issue that matters passes through your hands three times: it surfaces in the pre-shadow, gets rethought during the retrograde, and closes in the post-shadow. The 2026 shadows are in the table; the longest is October 4 to November 30 around the Scorpio retrograde.
What each 2026 retrograde wants
With all three in water signs, the year’s shared theme is what has gone unsaid emotionally rather than logistically.
- February 26 to March 20, Pisces. The retrograde of blurred boundaries. Misunderstandings come not from bad faith but from nobody saying plainly what they want. For three weeks, rebuild every sentence that ends in “I guess” so it ends in “I want.” Good for returning to an abandoned dream or a half-finished creative project.
- June 29 to July 23, Cancer. Home, family and the past. An old family matter, a childhood house or a relative you haven’t spoken to may resurface. A good stretch not to rush a move or a house purchase, and a good one for sorting old photos and a long call with your mother.
- October 24 to November 13, Scorpio. The deepest of the year. Secrets, shared money, trust. Something unsaid is more likely to surface now; read it as cleansing, not threatening. Not the time to start a fight, but a fitting time to finally say a truth you already know.
What to do and not do during Mercury retrograde
The rule is simple: slow down what is hard to undo, keep doing what is reversible.
- Slow down: large purchases, signing contracts, replacing phones and laptops, sending important messages unread. If you must, do it; just read it twice.
- Keep going: work, exercise, appointments, planned travel. Mercury retrograde does not stop life; it asks for a backup plan.
- Do on purpose: call an old friend, return to a paused project, review last month’s decisions, edit a draft. Retrograde is the best time of year for exactly these.

How these retrogrades affect you personally
The effect lands in whichever house of your chart the retrograde sign occupies, which is why the same retrograde reminds one person of money and another of an old love. If you don’t know your rising sign you can’t know your houses; the rising sign calculator finds it from your birth date, time and place. Euphia then gives you the house and a reading of each retrograde against your own chart.
Your chart has more to say
What you just read is one thread of a much larger pattern. Your Rising, Moon, Venus and Mars weave a story that belongs only to you — Euphia reads it with you, gently and honestly.
