What is a rising sign?

A rising sign is the zodiac sign that was ascending on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place of your birth; astrologers call it the ascendant. It is the self other people meet first: your manner, your reflexes, the way you walk into a room. It also sets the first house of your chart, which means it decides where every planet does its work in your life. That is why two people with the same Sun sign can be unrecognisably different, and why the rising sign is often called more important than the Sun sign.

How is the rising sign calculated?

The Earth turns once a day, so all twelve signs rise over the horizon in 24 hours, roughly one every two hours. Which one is rising depends on the sidereal time at your longitude, the tilt of the Earth's axis, and your latitude. This calculator converts your local birth time to universal time with the time zone of your city, including the daylight-saving rules in force that year, computes the local sidereal time and the true obliquity of the ecliptic with an astronomical ephemeris, and solves the ascendant with the standard formula used by professional chart software. Reference: the ascendant advances about 1° every 4 minutes of clock time on average, and each sign takes between roughly 1 and 3 hours to rise depending on latitude and season (signs of "short" and "long" ascension), which is why the tool shows your sign's actual window.

Why does the rising sign need my birth place?

Because the horizon is local. At the same instant, Istanbul and New York have different signs on their eastern horizon, so the ascendant depends on where you were born in a way the Sun sign and Moon sign do not. Latitude also stretches and compresses the signs: far from the equator some signs rise in under an hour and others take three. Pick the nearest large city; within about 50 km the result does not change.

What if I don't know my birth time?

Then no calculator can give you a rising sign, and any that claims to is guessing. Start with your birth certificate: many countries record the time. Hospitals keep records for years, and a parent's "just before lunch" can be enough to rule signs in or out. Is this rising sign calculator accurate?

Yes. It computes the ascendant from the sidereal time at your birth place, the true obliquity of the ecliptic for your birth date, and your latitude, which is the same calculation professional chart software performs, using an astronomical ephemeris. The only thing it cannot correct is a wrong birth time or time zone, so it also shows you the window of time during which your rising sign was up, and warns you if you were born within 15 minutes of a change.

Why does the rising sign need my birth place?

Because the ascendant is literally the sign rising over the eastern horizon where you were born, and the horizon depends on where you stand. Two babies born at the same minute in Istanbul and in New York have different rising signs. The calculator uses the city's latitude and longitude for the geometry and its time zone, including historical daylight-saving rules, to convert your local time to universal time.

What if I don't know my birth time?

Then the rising sign cannot be calculated; it changes sign roughly every two hours, so a guess is as likely wrong as right. Check your birth certificate, hospital records or family first. Why do different websites give me a different rising sign?

Almost always a time-zone problem: one site treated your local birth time as universal time, or applied the wrong daylight-saving rule for that year. Less often, a site uses the sidereal zodiac, which sits about 24 degrees behind the tropical zodiac used here. Note that the house system does not change the ascendant in any of the common quadrant systems (Placidus, Koch, Porphyry, Regiomontanus); only whole-sign and equal houses present it differently, and even then the rising sign itself is the same.

My city isn't in the list. What should I pick?

The nearest larger city. The ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes of time, and one degree of longitude on Earth equals four minutes of time, so a place 50 km away changes the result by well under a degree. Just make sure the city you pick is in the same time zone as your birthplace.
